Our Emission Control Program

Checking your emissions is important. It’s also part of the regulations in the auto industry. That’s why we use the Inspection/Maintenance emission control program. The I/M program is designed to improve air quality by ensuring vehicle emissions are within the required limits. The Environmental Protection Agency currently requires the program in some states to promote better air quality.

The program works by identifying vehicles with high emissions. Once these vehicles are identified, proper maintenance can be used to prevent high emissions due to neglect. Cars in the program are tested based on the year they were made, and the regulations vary depending on that year. On the whole, this program can help make tangible impacts on local air quality.

This is a federal program, but states and local agencies have some flexibility. There is local control to determine the types of tests, vehicle populations, and other details. Some states have a centralized program with state-contracted test stations. However, other states let tests be done at local repair facilities. There are also some hybrid programs. Lately, the program has used second-generation onboard diagnostics to eliminate tailpipe emissions testing.
